Gum Disease and Heart Disease
More and more it is believed there is a direct link between a healthy mouth and a healthy heart. Inflammation or swollen gums are a sign of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease happens when plaque builds up causing bacteria to grow below the gum line. Because gums are highly vascularized, the bacteria enters the blood stream causing inflammation in other parts of the body. Inflammation in the heart leads to hardening of arteries, also called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis makes it hard for blood to flow to the heart increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. Studies have shown when there is an absence of gum disease, there is significantly less bacteria found in the heart. Just one more reason to make sure you are getting regular dental cleanings. If you are due for a dental cleaning call 952-938-7746 or click HERE to schedule your cleaning today. … [Read more...]
Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is when stomach acid comes back up into the esophagus, throat or mouth. It can be especially hard on your teeth. The enamel (or protective layer of your teeth) begins to erode away when it is exposed to an acid of a pH of 5.5 or less. Stomach acid has a pH of 2 or less, which makes getting your acid reflux under control a priority. Some signs you may be suffering from acid reflux are: Sharp or burning chest pain behind the breastbone Tightness in your chest or upper abdomen Regurgitation Nausea A recurring bitter or sour taste in your mouth Difficulty swallowing Hoarseness, especially in the morning Sore throat Coughing, wheezing or continually needing to clear your throat There are ways to prevent acid reflux and protect your teeth. Elevate the head of your bed, at least 6 inches Avoid foods that cause the esophageal sphincter to relax during digestion. Around Town: Part 2
We were able to spend some time at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, as well as the Walker Art Center. Like the Como Zoo, the Minneapolis Institute of Art is free, but donations are welcome. The first Saturday of every month is free at the Walker Art Center, as well as Thursday nights, and kids 0-18 are always free. It's a nice way to expose your children to the arts without having to pay an arm and a leg. The Minneapolis Institute of Art is located next to Children's Theater Company, it might be nice to combine visits if you're looking for something extra special to do. The Minneapolis Institute of Art has family day the second Sunday of each month. You will be able to make art, go on artful adventures, meet local artists, musicians, dancers & storytellers with your children. The third Thursday of every month, the Minneapolis Institute of Art invites you to experience Mia's diverse art collection through unique experiences, libations and live music, refreshments are … [Read more...]
Around Town: Part 1
We took advantage of the long Labor Day weekend to explore "around town". We started with a quick stop at Black Coffee and Waffle Bar on Como Ave. They serve specialty waffles, coffee and tea for a reasonable price. It has a very laid back atmosphere, you bus your own table & grab your own condiments. It seemed quite popular with the younger crowd, I was easily 15-20 years older than the oldest person there. But don't let your age stop you from visiting Black Coffee and Waffle Bar, it really was a fun stop on our way to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. I was hopeful the crowds would be down due to the Minnesota State Fair being so close to the zoo and conservatory, boy was I wrong! Labor Day weekend was the last weekend for the Butterfly garden & the Sparky the Seal show, and it felt like everyone wanted to fit in one last day at the zoo! Despite some of their exhibits closing for the fall/winter, there is still plenty to see and do at Como Park, so don't let that … [Read more...]
