Vaping is quickly taking over as a "healthy" alternative to smoking, or at least that is what we are lead to believe. E-cigarettes are relatively new to the market, they have been around for only 15 years or so, making the long-term effects fairly unknown. Recent studies have found e-cigs/vaping to be just a harmful as smoking to the cells in your mouth. Vaping can contribute to gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancer. As with traditional cigarettes, the vapor in e-cigarettes makes contact with your mouth when the vapor is the hottest. This heat can irritate and cause damage to sensitive gum tissue. Nicotine, often found in e-liquids, is highly addictive. When you stop using it, you can go through withdrawal, feeling depressed and crabby. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which means it reduces blood flow to tissue, which inhibits the tissue's ability to repair itself. Research also shows it harms the developing brains of kids, affecting memory and attention. Nicotine damages … [Read more...]

Gum Disease and Heart Disease
More and more it is believed there is a direct link between a healthy mouth and a healthy heart. Inflammation or swollen gums are a sign of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease happens when plaque builds up causing bacteria to grow below the gum line. Because gums are highly vascularized, the bacteria enters the blood stream causing inflammation in other parts of the body. Inflammation in the heart leads to hardening of arteries, also called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis makes it hard for blood to flow to the heart increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. Studies have shown when there is an absence of gum disease, there is significantly less bacteria found in the heart. Just one more reason to make sure you are getting regular dental cleanings. Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is when stomach acid comes back up into the esophagus, throat or mouth. It can be especially hard on your teeth. The enamel (or protective layer of your teeth) begins to erode away when it is exposed to an acid of a pH of 5.5 or less. Stomach acid has a pH of 2 or less, which makes getting your acid reflux under control a priority. Some signs you may be suffering from acid reflux are: Sharp or burning chest pain behind the breastbone Tightness in your chest or upper abdomen Regurgitation Nausea A recurring bitter or sour taste in your mouth Difficulty swallowing Hoarseness, especially in the morning Sore throat Coughing, wheezing or continually needing to clear your throat There are ways to prevent acid reflux and protect your teeth. Elevate the head of your bed, at least 6 inches Avoid foods that cause the esophageal sphincter to relax during digestion. (These include: coffee, chocolate, fatty foods, whole milk, peppermint & … [Read more...]
Around Town: Part 1
We took advantage of the long Labor Day weekend to explore "around town". We started with a quick stop at Black Coffee and Waffle Bar on Como Ave. They serve specialty waffles, coffee and tea for a reasonable price. It has a very laid back atmosphere, you bus your own table & grab your own condiments. It seemed quite popular with the younger crowd, I was easily 15-20 years older than the oldest person there. But don't let your age stop you from visiting Black Coffee and Waffle Bar, it really was a fun stop on our way to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. I was hopeful the crowds would be down due to the Minnesota State Fair being so close to the zoo and conservatory, boy was I wrong! Labor Day weekend was the last weekend for the Butterfly garden & the Sparky the Seal show, and it felt like everyone wanted to fit in one last day at the zoo! Despite some of their exhibits closing for the fall/winter, there is still plenty to see and do at Como Park, so don't let that … [Read more...]
I LOVE My Sonicare!
I have recently found myself without my Sonicare toothbrush and I couldn't be more sad! Admittedly, I was the last one in my family to switch to a Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush. I'm not sure why, possibly because I don't like change or maybe because I liked my manual toothbrush?! But once I used the Sonicare, I was hooked! My Sonicare goes everywhere with me, I simply can't live without it. One great feature is the up to 19 day battery life. Which means you can leave the charging base at home! Honestly, nothing cleans my teeth better than the Philips Sonicare. I didn't realize what a poor job I was doing with a manual toothbrush until I felt how clean my teeth were with the Sonicare. Philips Sonicare is 7x more effective at removing plaque over a manual toothbrush. The Sonicare makes 31,000 brush strokes per minute, no wonder my teeth feel so clean! As I sit here waiting to be reunited with my Sonicare, I feel compelled to get people to make the switch. Once you do, … [Read more...]

Sea Life: Mall Of America
Minnesota offers so many things to do in the summer. It seems every town has their own celebration, but we decided to take a break from the parades, carnivals & corndogs to check out Sea Life at the Mall of America. It had been over a decade since I first visited the aquarium and I still found it magical. I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with my nephew AND Bomstad Dental patient, Oliver! We were slightly disappointed we were no longer able to touch the stingrays. Sea Life is currently working on a breeding program, so they are not allowing the public to touch the rays. We still enjoyed watching them glide around their tank and were able to ask the staff many questions about the different types of rays on exhibit. You can also purchase shrimp and fish to feed the rays. Although the rays were off limits for us to touch, they still had things we could touch, including sea anemones. Sea Life: Mall of America really entertains people of all ages, but 8 was a … [Read more...]
