He’s Back At It!
Dr. Bomstad is headed to Carlsbad, California and the Zimmer Biomet Institute for continuing education. This weekend, Dr. Bomstad will be taking a hands-on workshop on immediate and definitive restorations of the edentulous arch. Sounds impressive, but what does it mean? Dr. Bomstad will further his implant dentistry education. This class will address patients who are missing all of their teeth and wish to have their smile immediately restored. The objective of the course is to identify patients who are candidates for immediate full-arch restorations and fabricate an immediate full-arch provisional restoration. This will take place in a state-of-the-art Simulated Patient Training Laboratory. While it seems like the perfect time to head to sunny California, Dr. Bomstad is quick to point out he will be in class everyday from 8-5. Leaving no time in the day for anything recreational, especially after an exhausting day of learning! Dr. Bomstad will be back in the office on … [Read more...]
Bunny Cake in Time for Easter!
My grandmother started making bunny cakes for Easter in the '60s and my mother carried on the tradition. As a child, I loved to help decorate the bunny's face (probably because I liked jelly beans and licorice!). We do, however, have a long standing "argument" about adding coconut to the bunny. I have to admit, sprinkling coconut on the cake makes really cute bunny fur (and helps hide frosting imperfections!), but I simply don't care for coconut on my cake. Unfortunately, my mom LOVES coconut on her cake. As a compromise, she only puts pink (dyed) coconut on the ears and this makes everyone happy! Here is a picture of my mother, circa 1973. The early bunny cakes were made in a 9x13 cake pan, cutting off 2- 2x9 inch pieces for the ears. This is perfect because almost everyone has a 9x13 cake pan, even a 20 year old newlywed! Now we've started to use two round cake pans, allowing us to create ears AND a bowtie-so fancy! You can even buy cake pans in the shape of a bunny, as … [Read more...]
Continuing Education
Dr. Bomstad spent this past weekend at the Great Lakes Implant Institute's Advance Grafting Course. He spent his time learning different techniques for implant grafting, allowing him to do sinus lifts and connective tissue grafts. Sinus lifts or maxillary sinus floor augmentation is a surgical procedure which aims to increase the amount of bone in the posterior maxilla (upper jaw bone), in the area of premolar and molar teeth, by sacrificing some of the volume of the maxillary sinus. Connective tissue grafts is a periodontal plastic surgical procedure that thickens attached gingiva for increased implant health. It is no surprise to anyone here that Dr. Bomstad was a star pupil. He was able to master the techniques taught with ease, truly showcasing his gift for producing the highest quality dentistry. Dr. Bomstad will be furthering his education even more with two more courses this fall at Great Lakes Implant Institute. He will be taking a course on Implant Treatment Planning, … [Read more...]
Bleeding Gums?
Bleeding gums can be a sign of a much bigger problem in your mouth. All too often bleeding gums are dismissed as brushing or flossing too hard. While it's true, trauma can cause gums to bleed, frequent bleeding is generally due to something else. The number one cause of bleeding gums is the build up of plaque along and below the gum line. This condition is called gingivitis or periodontal disease depending on it's severity. Gingivitis is easily treatable, a cleaning with your favorite hygienist will do the trick! Periodontal disease is an advanced stage of gingivitis and is more difficult to treat. It will require many appointments with your hygienist for root planing and scaling. This is done with anesthetic, so it's not as awful as it sounds! If you are still experiencing bleeding gums after receiving a good dental check up, it could be something other than poor dental hygiene. Bleeding gums could indicate a vitamin K or C deficiency, a bleeding disorder, leukemia, or poor … [Read more...]

We’re Excited to Offer Zoom Teeth Whitening!
We are excited to now be able to offer you the Zoom! Teeth Whitening System!!! The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System is an effective and safe way to whiten teeth. It is one of the most popular light activated systems on the market today. The Zoom! Teeth Whitening System uses a unique hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel and activator. The activator in the gel reacts with a special LED halide light giving you quick and beautiful results. On the day of treatment, a hygienist will prep your mouth for 3-4 Zoom! sessions. Each session lasts approximately 15 minutes. After your treatments are over, you will receive your custom dental trays, one DayWhite or NiteWhite take-home whitening gel syringe and a Relief … [Read more...]
Time for Braces?
It's a big deal when your child loses their first baby tooth. They look so adorable with their missing teeth! Shortly after, one week to six months, an adult (permanent) tooth will appear-this is what I call the awkward years! Their little faces don't quite fit their new adult-size teeth. This can be concerning for parents when they see crooked teeth and large gaps as the new teeth erupt. It is often difficult for the untrained eye to determine if there really is an orthodontic problem. Here is an example of a little girl through the years. When her permanent teeth started to appear, they looked quite crooked. But when all of her permanent teeth came in, her teeth looked really straight. In reality, she ended up needing braces for smaller problems (malocclusions) that are not as noticeable, but if left untreated would have left her with jaw issues as an adult. Dr. Bomstad and Dr. Karban send most of their patients to Harrington Orthodontics or Lake Minnetonka … [Read more...]
Oranges and Cloves
Do you have house guests coming? Oranges and cloves are the perfect way to make your house smell wonderful! My grandmother would have these in her house every Christmas and the smell was amazing. Recently I was reminded again of oranges and cloves when a friend put them in her blog. This craft is so simple to do, your kids could even do it for you! I take a wooden skewer and pre-poke holes for the cloves to be inserted into. You can push the cloves into the orange without using a skewer, but my thumb gets sore after awhile, it is much easier to use a skewer. Here's where you can get creative with different designs, or cover the entire orange with cloves if you wish. Once you have your holes poked into the orange, simply push the whole cloves into the orange until you've achieved your desired look! Christmas Tea
Christmas Tea is the perfect hostess gift. It is easy to make and enjoyed by all! I like to put the Christmas Tea in a mason jar with a ribbon & sweet note for the hosts. To make Christmas Tea you will need: 2 cups Tang 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup instant tea 3 ounces powdered lemonade 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves Cinnamon imperials Most recipes do not include cinnamon imperials, but I think they make the tea more festive! Once you've mixed your powders together, store your tea in an airtight container. To make your tea, mix 2-3 teaspoons into boiling water. I like my tea a bit sweeter and end up putting 4-5 teaspoons into my cup! But don't worry, I always brush my teeth after! Happy Holidays! … [Read more...]
